History of QRS

Melville Clark, famous for his work with Story & Clark pianos, founded QRS in 1900. He was responsible for developing the player piano, the version we see today. QRS was a significant supplier of music rolls for the player piano market, with their production peaking in 1927 at 10 million rolls sold. The player piano's popularity lasted from 1900 until the Great Depression in the 1930s. The Great Depression and the emergence of affordable radios in 1927 led to the decline of player piano production throughout the country. However, the demand for rolls persisted and was reignited in the 1950s when people started to restore old player pianos. In 1986, QRS shifted its focus to new technologies and launched its first digital retrofit player piano kit named Pianomation™ in 1989. QRS is now a leader in the industry, introducing exciting innovations in home musical entertainment. QRS Music Technologies became a publicly traded company in 1996.
